2024: A Year in Photos

2024 has been a year of challenge and success, gratitude and grief. The year started off with a bang and didn’t let up until August, at which point I was forced to slow down due to some health related issues for both myself and Kwinn before she passed away in October. Through it all, I did manage to make photography more of a priority than I have been afforded over the past couple of years. My primary photography goal for 2024 was to re-immerse myself in night photography again, level up with new techniques both in the field and in post, and come away with some great new images. I’m proud to say I achieved that goal and managed to get out for some great adventures in the process. I was also published twice, delved into insect macro photography, explored many new-to-me waterfalls this past autumn, saw some of the most surreal northern lights shows of my life, experienced some of the best wildlife encounters I’ve ever had and managed to return to Southern California, one of my favourite places, for the first time in five years. I also switched camera brands in 2024 moving from Canon to the Nikon Z 8 mirrorless system and, I have to say, I’m very glad to have made this move for a variety of reasons. I absolutely love my Z 8 and all my new lenses and captured most of my favourite images this year with them.

All told, 2024 was a very up and down year for me, both personally and professionally, but photographically, it was very rewarding. Through it all, I managed to find solace behind the lens and out in the field. Here are my favourite images from the year (click to view in full gallery):
