An incredible, powerful, astonishing, beautiful and generational display of aurora held most of the world rapt on May 10th, 2024. For the first time in 21 years, we hit Kp9/G5 geomagnetic conditions and the lights were seen as far south as the Bahamas near the equator. I have been photographing the northern lights for nearly a decade and this was one of the most incredible shows I’ve ever seen.

After checking real time satellite data looking for holes in the cloud, I went southwest of Edmonton where a clear sky window held for nearly three hours. This shot was taken around 1am facing south as the corona overhead erupted through the wall of naked eye reds in front of us. A moment of pure joy from a night of wonder.
