12 days before I took this photo, my old pup Kwinn and I discovered this special overlook where we sat alone for a couple of hours, just enjoying each other’s company. I could have stayed in that moment forever and had I know that just six days later she’d pass away, I would have.

Just a few days later, over a 24 hour period, I drove over 1000km there and back to capture Kwinn’s Comet (Tsuchinshan-Atlas) one last time from this same spot, over these same mountains, illuminated by the light of the full moon. It was freezing up there and I found myself underdressed so I wrapped myself in her blanket to stay warm.

I drove back to my place there in silence, stopping to put air in my tires at the Co-op and when I finished I turned the radio on. As I did a cover version of Warren Zevon’s “Keep Me in Your Heart” started playing on CKUA, an already poignant song made even more so as it’s a song I played when I got home from the vet after saying goodbye to Kwinn. It was a surreal sign from a beautiful night dedicated to her memory.

While I am grateful for these moments and the experiences we shared together, the truth is I’m beyond heartbroken and I miss my dog so much. 💔
