This unique old house with its frost rimmed trim and shiny metallic siding almost glows in the ambient light from a distant farm. It feels like an outpost on some distant, cold, far-off planet where space cowboys would bed down after a day of exploring and a night of fisticuffs.

This was my last shot after a very long night and it almost didn’t happen. I’ve had this spot (and another adjacent to it) targeted for over a year. I woke myself up at 1am, dragging myself out of my warm, cozy bed, triple checking the cloud apps to see if the one lone spot of cloud coincidentally over this very spot was still there. Two said no, one said yes. Real time satellite data showed massive clearing. But it was still a gamble at 140km away. I took the chance and hit the road at 130am, encountering clear skies most of the way. The one spot of cloud was there for a time but I emerged on the other side with deadly perfect skies to the southeast ahead. The gamble paid off. I spent over an hour working on a panorama of another building and then made my way over to this spot just before the start of astronomical twilight. I took my first shots along a different angle, packed up content, and spent some time just appreciating the silence and the stars before the first crack of light. As I was pulling away, I spotted this angle and loved how it lined up with the core. I rushed to set back up, lit the interior again and fired some frames just as the sky turned ever so slightly blue with the first light of the day. What a perfect night. I had the sunrise chasing me back for the whole drive home and watched as the world came to life from its deep, deep slumber.

I love nights like these.
